Not a perfect 5 star because it started in a very slow pace. I feel like the first five episodes of character build up for development purposes was over the top and prolonged than what it was supposed to be. It lacked a bit of spice and action on its first half for season 1. The storyline, uniqueness, and plot twist is what made me decide to give it a 4 star. On its own right, it offers a new perspective and concept altogether. Not your usual sci-fi, zombie, vampire and werewolf theme. Plot twist is something that surprised me -- I didn't see it coming. The last 2 episodes were the best, and they somehow managed to end it with a bang using a cliffhanger that was literally cut-off right in the middle of a battle royale where all the action was supposed to happen. Lol
It is a good sign in a way that they will hopefully have a better kickstart on its second season unlike its predecessor.
Hell yeah, pardon the pun.
It seems no other channel is currently beating Netflix in terms of sheer selection. And this show is just one in a long line of binge worthy things to watch.
It's not perfect, the show started out slow, and at times even annoyingly so. Not being a fan of teen melodrama, of which the first few episode mostly were comprised of, I had to push through. But when they started focusing on the Nuns, and the mythos, this show quickly picked up both in terms of pacing, and development.
Slow start aside, there are plenty to like about this show. The main character Ava, is spunky and sarcastically comical. The other characters (nuns) too, are great once you're given a chance to get to know them, which is why it was so infuriating that the first few episodes gave so little time for them.
The action is well choreographed, with only a few cuts and quick edits. The special effects aren't groundbreaking but still quite a cut above most other typical fantasy TV series like Supernatural, or the likes.
And the visuals, shot in scenic locations in Europe (Spain and Italy it seems) are gorgeous.
If you're a fan of action fantasy or drama, you may want to give this show a chance.
P.S. A bit of a tangent, but why isn't Charlotte Vega listed in the credits? Sure, she's not all that famous, and the part she played was rather small, but most of the other unknowns had their names listed in the credits. Doesn't seem right that she wasn't. But I digress. Watch the show.
Why? Netflix, why?
After having read reviews I was highly skeptical about this show. I almost dropped it but decided to watch anyways and boy was I right to watch it.
It starts with Ava lying dead in a church and some nuns crashing in the church guns blazing! The leader dies and somehow the Halo gets stuck in Ava and she lives again and there begins the story of our Warrior Nun. The first half can test your patience but its not all bad. Some part of storyline was unnecessary like JC and the house crashers, that for me was not really needed. Anyways it is the last episodes that really get this home. So many twists and reveals and the finale is very good. But my biggest complain is that the finale ends at such a point which is not good. You'd feel a bit cheated as to having watched the entire series just to be left hanging in the end. I really hope there's a second season cause i can promise you anybody that has watched or will watch this show will want it to happen. All the cast is good and they really keep you interested.
I'd say not to worry too much about the reviews and just go watch it. It's a good series and has potential, lots of it.
Deducted one star for the painful cliffhanger.
I wanted to like this but it fell flat to me.
Looked fantastic, well acted (specially Ava) and some fight scenes were choreographed really well but to me, it lost itself quickly.
spoilers!
Cons
characters - Ava takes too long to become a warrior. She runs away and only uses her powers by accident at first and hides from the demons/other nuns. Some characters just disappear, after being heavily involved in some episodes.
Even tho there is some episodes that are just dialogue - there's isn't character progression/depth to them, I couldn't care much if many of them were killed.
The show - why warrior nun? The lead isnt a warrior or a nun, most of the fighting is between the nuns themselves and there is only about 4 episodes that have a 'demon' in them and they are aren't around for more than a few mins.
it's too long, could have lost 3/4 eps and not made a difference. The sub plots - especially with the sick boy are just absolutely absurd (trying to goto another dimension that should be free of pain?) Some eps have great cliffhangers that you feel, the next one will be fantastic and they just a let down and usually resolved within a couple mins. Why are the nuns always fighting within themselves!?! 1 ep has the same 2 nuns in 3 different fights with each other.
The location - the locations always looked great, suited the story well but for it being set in Spain, there is too much American accents. Prob would have suited it more being in Spanish with subtitles, made it a bit more believable.
The main cliffhanger - that was one of the most random ones I've seen. Very bold move and if there isn't a new season, could be considered one of the worst there has been. Kinda reminded me of the finale in 'Angel'
